Once upon a time, in 1903, a bright-eyed girl named Ella Baker was born. Ella lived in a time when things weren't fair for everyone, especially people with skin like hers. This made Ella mad. She believed everyone deserved to be treated equally.
Ella was a super smart cookie. She aced her classes and even became the top student in her whole school! When she grew up, she moved to a big city and started working to help people who were struggling.
One day, a brave woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. This sparked a huge movement called the Civil Rights Movement, where people fought for fairness. Ella knew she had to join the fight.
Ella wasn't a fan of bosses telling everyone what to do. She thought people should work together as a team. So, she helped create a group called the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC for short. SNCC was special because it was run by young people, just like you!
Ella, like a patient coach, taught these students how to organize protests and fight for their rights peacefully. She believed in their power and never told them what to do. Instead, she asked questions that helped them find their own answers.
Thanks to Ella and the brave young people of SNCC, things slowly started to change. Schools became open to everyone, and people with all skin colors could use the same buses and restaurants.
Even though Ella passed away many years ago, her work is still important today. She showed us that anyone, even a young person like you, can make a difference in the world. All it takes is a big heart, a brave spirit, and a belief that everyone deserves to be treated fairly!
